Why living in Abu Dhabi?

I moved to Abu Dhabi for new career opportunities and the unique cultural experience. The UAE’s rapid development and its blend of modernity with tradition really intrigued me. Abu Dhabi, in particular, offers a more relaxed pace compared to Dubai, and it seemed like the perfect place for a new chapter.

How Long Have I Been Here?

I’ve been in Abu Dhabi for 3 years now, and it’s been an adventure adjusting to life here!

Moving Process

Moving to the UAE was quite straightforward as my employer sponsored my visa, which made things easier. Upon arrival, I received my resident ID by completing a few medical tests and submitting necessary documents. Once the paperwork was complete, I was all set to live here.

Living in Abu Dhabi: cultural differences

The UAE’s culture is a unique blend of local traditions and international influence. A big difference I noticed is the emphasis on modesty in dress and behavior, especially in public spaces. One memorable experience was during Ramadan; as a non-Muslim, I wasn’t used to refraining from eating or drinking in public during the day, but I quickly adapted and gained a new appreciation for the practice.

Work Culture Differences

In terms of work style, I’ve found the UAE to have a more formal workplace environment compared to England. Hierarchies are important, and respect for seniority is highly valued. Many workplaces here offer a better work-life balance and have adopted shorter workweeks since recent changes in labor laws.

Job Search Before Arriving

I secured my job before moving, which made the transition smoother. For those looking to work in the UAE, popular job search platforms include LinkedIn, Bayt, and GulfTalent. Many people also connect through recruitment agencies that specialize in the region.

Living in Abu Dhabi: cost rent vs England

The cost of rent varies widely in Abu Dhabi, depending on location and type of apartment. Generally, a one-bedroom apartment in the city center can cost around 5,000–10,000 AED (approx. £1,000–£2,200) per month. Comparatively, I’d say prices are slightly higher than in most UK cities outside London.

Food costs here are comparable to those in England. Monthly groceries can range between 1,000–2,500 AED (£200–£500), depending on whether you shop at local markets or international grocery stores. Eating out can be pricey in high-end spots but affordable at local and mid-range restaurants.

Highlights of Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi’s economy is booming, driven by oil, tourism, and a growing tech sector. What stands out compared to England is the city’s investment in futuristic infrastructure and its aim to diversify away from oil, seen in projects like Masdar City, an eco-friendly tech hub.

Recommendation to Move Here?

Absolutely! Abu Dhabi offers a high standard of living, incredible cultural experiences, and excellent career prospects, especially in sectors like finance, education, healthcare, and technology.

I’m not entirely sure! I enjoy living here and am open to staying long-term if the opportunities remain as promising.

Advice for Aspiring Expats

Do your research on the local culture and norms, especially around dress and behavior, and be prepared for a slightly slower pace in paperwork and bureaucracy than you might be used to.

Next Destination/Project

After Abu Dhabi, I might explore more of the Middle East or perhaps even Southeast Asia. My next project is to document these experiences on my blog to give future expats a glimpse into life abroad.
